Metal Gear series surpasses 60 million sales

Despite not releasing a mainline entry since 2018, Hideo Kojima’s prolific work continues to bring business for Konami.

According to a recent post on Konami’s website, the Metal Gear series has officially topped 60 million units sold. Hideo Kojima’s work - first released in 1987 - is still selling well following his departure from the company in 2015.

This is unsurprising as Metal Gear is still regarded as one of the most prolific video game series of all time, however with recent controversy regarding the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Delta, a from-the-ground-up remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, it remains to be seen if this stride will continue as Konami continues to release these games as remakes and remasters in future.

According to VGChartz, the series had sold approximately 59.3 million units as of November 2022, indicating at least 700 thousand units sold in the past 7 months alone, which is definitely a feat considering the last game released, Metal Gear Survive, which was hardly a critical success, launched back in 2018.

The stealth series has generated over US$1 billion in revenue for Konami since it’s initial launch in 1987.

A remaster collection of the first three games in the series is set to release on all platforms on the 24th of October this year.
